The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (WSL-SLF) seek 3 PhD positions to work on the distribution of impurities in snow and glacier ice in a cross-disciplinaryproject.

The planned innovative experimental studies are predominately laboratory based. The project’s main goal is to investigate the re-distribution of particulate and soluble impurities in snow during metamorphism. This is a fundamental topic with high relevance to snow chemistry, atmospheric science, and to the integrity of ice cores as climate and environmental archives.

We are looking for highly skilled and enthusiastic young researchers to work in this cooperative project in the surface chemistry research group at PSI, the analytical chemistry research group at PSI, or in the snow physics research group at WSL-SLF.

Main tasks:

- Plan, carry out, analyse, and interpret laboratory-based experiments with trace levels of impurities
- Help developing new instrumentation and new experimental approaches
- Collaborate with project members and external partners
- Presentation of results at international conferences and publication in scientific journals

Specific tasks subproject in analytical chemistry group (PSI):
- Setting up cryo-cell laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) for high-resolution analyses of trace elements in high-alpine ice cores
- Developing calibration standards for the cryo-cell LA-ICP-MS
- Conventional trace element analysis of an Alpine ice core with ICP-MS

Specific tasks subproject in surface chemistry group (PSI):
- Perform experiments to derive the reaction kinetics of impurities that are embedded in snow at different locations
- Improve an existing method to probe the chemical reactivity in-situ in artificial and natural snow samples

Specific tasks subproject in snow physics group (WSL-SLF):
- Investigate the re-distribution of water molecules during dry metamorphism using stable isotope analysis
- Develop method(s) and measure the location and re-distribution of impurities in dry snow, especially the evolution during dry snow metamorphism
- Develop models of re-distribution of impurities during dry snow metamorphism
- Improve the existing snow maker instrument to produce natureidentical snow with doped impurities


- Master or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Physics, or environmental science / earth science
- Experience and strong interest in experimental work
- Technical talent, analytical thinking skills, problem solving genius
- Proven team-worker and interest to work periodically at PSI, WSL-SLF, or ETHZ
- Basic knowledge in ice core research, snow physics and chemistry, physical chemistry, or trace analysis is beneficial
- Fluent in English, interest to learn German

The positions are available from April 2015 (negotiable) with a duration of 36 months. The successful candidates will inscribe at ETH Zurich (surface chemistry group and snow physics group) or at the University of Berne (analytical chemistry group).
