Space Applications Services is establishing a team of up to 4 members for the development of science operations dataflow software for the ESO Paranal observatories. The work will include design, implementation, testing and maintenance updates of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) dataflow applications. The team shall include a Project Manager and experienced software developers.

The successful candidate(s) will be based at the ESO headquarters in Garching (Munich, Germany).

The positions are in the Services Department (comprises of 36 persons), Engineering Team. The candidate(s) will mainly report to the Engineering Team Lead and the Services Department Manager and interact with our Customer on a regular basis.

The overall tasks and responsibilities of the foreseen team are:
- Project management:
o Manage planning and priorities, in close cooperation with the Customer
o Assign tasks, monitor execution and work quality according to standards and guidelines
o Ensure adequate software architecture and API specification
- Back-end: Develop and test REST APIs in Java/Groovy, with relational database backend (JDBC, Hibernate, Spring)
- Front-end: Develop web user interfaces in Angular/TypeScript; Update/develop Java/Swing desktop GUI applications, in Linux and Mac OS X; Assess and improve interface usability aspects
- Testing: Automate testing of RESTful APIs and Web interfaces.
Qualifications and Experience
- University degree in computer science, physics or equivalent and minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience
- Familiarity with Agile and very good knowledge of Java software development
- Experience with modern software engineering practices and tools, including configuration management tools (preferably SVN
and Git), incremental & iterative development, unit and integration testing and the Linux environment
- Experience with issue management systems, and continuous integration systems (e.g. Jenkins).
Candidates will have the following skills
- Familiarity with Astronomy or scientific computing environment will be considered as an advantage
- Strong sense for quality development and strength to cope with schedules and deadlines
- Excellent written and spoken English, ability to work in distributed international teams
- Excellent organisational and communication skills, with initiative and ability to work independently.
