The Astronomy Communication Specialist is responsible for managing the production of the ESO news items (press releases, announcements etc.), background information on the web and acts as ESO’s interface with the media.

The main tasks include:
- Participation in the continuous process of improving ESO’s outreach strategy;
- Managing the production of press releases, announcements, pictures of the week and other news products;
- Overseeing the integration of written and visual material in audiovisual products such as video podcasts etc.;
- Occasional preparation of event-related outreach material (e.g. press kits);
- Supporting external requests from journalists, scientists and the general public;
- Coordinating a weekly news team meeting;
- Overseeing the maintenance of ESO’s most important background information web pages;
- The tasks are not limited to the above and a flexible approach and willingness to adapt are required.

- Several years of proven experience working as a professional communicator of astronomy to the public;
- Demonstrated experience in project coordination (ideally in a fast-paced outreach, news or marketing environment);
- Sufficient audiovisual knowledge and proficiency to coordinate the production of audiovisual and web products;
- Strong Office applications skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and similar);
- Familiarity with the European media and their modus operandi would be an advantage.

- Very good organisational skills and ability to coordinate projects and work effectively and efficiently on a wide range of activities in parallel;
- Communicate clearly both orally and in writing and ability to work effectively in an international environment (incl. advanced presentation skills), collaborating with people from different countries and cultures;
- Result-oriented — delivering prompt and efficient service on multiple concurrent projects under tight deadlines;
- Strong analytical skills and ability to anticipate/identify problems and provide workable solutions independently;
- Be proactive, highly motivated and able to work within the department both in a team and independently;
- Be able to contribute ideas for improvements whilst following departmental procedures and workflows, and document new and updated procedures when necessary, so that colleagues can also follow them.
